Trouble With 6″ Pork Chop Jointer Guard
I have a Grizzle 6” jointer that I am using on some rough sawn 4/4 boards. The issue is as I start to take off the high spots the wood is slipping under the guard and getting wedged between the tables and the guard itself. Is there a limitation to the thickness of the wood you can safely milling on the jointer? Should I modify my guard, by riveting a piece of sheet metal around its outside edge so the guard comes all the way down to the table? I am new to using the jointer so I do not want to remove the guard.

If there is nothing keeping the pork chop from sitting lower then by all means add something to the guard. It should drop down lower though. Setscrews??? The pork chop guard is the worst of the jointer guards but there is no aftermarket option. There are several other guards found on European machines but obviously they are more expensive to supply hence the pork chop on American machines. It does meet OSHA standards. One of the Euro guards allows you to face boards by sliding it under the guard so if the board flies out you can't get your hand in the cutter. There was a company called Surty that made a retrofit guard in the 60's but got sued out of the business. Guards are a tricky thing legally. The old machine companies get sued continually as folks take the guards off table saws and they get resold many times and some one buys it and tries to sue them. This happened a lot to Oliver and many other companies. Happens to Delta a lot. That's why they have a bank of lawyers on staff.
A better jointer guard...

You should be able to adjust the guard. Loosen the bolt that holds the pivot post, move the guard down and then re-tighten bolt. That's how I adjust the guard on my Grizzly G0543 jointer.

Aftermarket jointer guard
It's been awhile since anyone posted here but I found this. It looks like an aftermarket jointer guard to me.

I couldn't find the price for those Northfield guards, but do note the smallest is 8". Also note that the 8"jointer that it is meant to fit
is over $11,000 for the cheaper medium duty model.. I'd bet the guards by themselves wouldf cost more than a 6"Grizzley jointer.
