I’m picking up an 8” jointer this weekend with the help of my friend and his pickup. The bed, motor, cutter and fence are packaged in a crate that is 24”x14”x80” and weighs upwards of 400lbs.

We can back his truck right up to the garage, and then it’s just a matter of moving it from the bed of the truck to the shop floor. Any tips for moving this beast besides lift with your legs and get a neighbor to help? 🙂

Thanks!

Rent an engine hoist to lift it and place it where needed.
400 lbs ain't much. Heck, you only have to lift one end at a time! Or, you can unpack the crate first and lighten the load a bit. Anyway you look at it, two guys and a sixpack should get 'er done.

Get a couple of those ramparts, that you attach 2x10s to to make into a ramp. I use them all the time for moving heavy stuff into and out of the truck. Just slide the carton down the ramp, or, get 4 casters and a piece of plywood and make a little flat cart. Both the ramps and cart will get lots of use for moving all sorts of stuff.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. I’m sure we won’t have a problem moving it, but just wanted to get some opinions.

Thanks everyone.
If you can get 2 buddies that should do it. If you cant do that, then do what I did when I brought my grizz bandsaw home. I put two 2x10's on the tailgate and lowered it on those to two apliance dolies (pardon the sp), and rolled it into the garage. It should slide right off. If you have any old carpet pieces that will help it slide better, but not required.
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Trevor,
An engine hoist works great. (See the attached photo.) Makes a one man job of it. I also used the hoist to move the jointer from the truck to a garden wagon to move it to the shop.

Hey Dusty-
That is one fine floor you got in the shop- I bet it can be a challenge to find a piece of scrap wood that falls to the floor :-)DaveSettle Down People... Settle Down
Dave,
It is linoleum tile on top of 3/4 plywood. Goes down easy. Is easy on the feet and any tools I drop on it. As far as finding scraps, there are plenty on it right now.

George,If you don't mind me asking, did you buy or rent the hoist and how much?Mike
Mike,
Actually I borrowed the hoist. But I did check at a local rental and it was about $50 a day.

U-Haul trailer. Cheap to rent, and low to the ground.
