I am finishing a chariot for a local high school play. The wheels are double thickness ¾” birch plywood, 32 “ diameter. I am concerned that wood wheels on a fairly slick wood stage floor will not have enough traction to make the wheel spin and simply slide.
I was thinking that I might paint the surface of the wheels with non-skid paint but thought that someone here might have a better idea. Any takers?

Non-skid paint might muck up the stage floor and make you an enemy out of the key grip, or whoever it is that takes care of such things. ;-)
I'd paint it with silicone caulk. Just grippy enough and it doesn't have to be permanent;.

It needs to last through multiple rehearsals, and I believe four performances. Do you suggest a very thin coat?<!----><!----><!---->

Thanks…
Heck, that'd be no problem. The stuff is pretty tenacious once it's dry. I'd just paint it on however thick it wants to go -- probably a sixteenth or so. Make sure to let it dry for a day or two before you work it very much.

You could try slitting rubber hose lengthwise, and fitting it to the wheels.

3M makes an adhesive backed non-skid product that is highly textured and made of a plastic. Its original use was for stairways/walkways. I just used it on some parts for a jointing sled for the planer. At my local Ace Hardware store, they have it in 1", 2" and 3" wide rolls. They sell it by the foot. Sounds perfect for your application. Tom
How about gluing cork strips on with contact cement. Just a thought.
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Run a bead of silicone caulk or adhesive around the rim.

Thanks to everyone!
Procure a tube from a truck tire that has blown out from a tire repair shop. cut a couple loops about 5 inches wide and stretch it around the chariot wheels.
What Tinkerer said in message 10. It is the easiest and usually free from any tire repair facility. The extra material is also good to keep around as gasket material and vibration and sound dampening fixes for various items. Many good uses, there.
edit tio add: ...or go to the hardware or bike supply store and just pick up a bike tire tube near your size (it would be thinner)
