Almost a year ago, there was considerable discussion about the use of Toothpaste as an agent for polishing varnish.
It may be of interest to a few Knots subscribers that a study of the subject has been published in the Southern California Association of Violin Makers Bulletin, Volume 38, Number 3, March, 2002. It is also published on the SCAVM’s Website,

Did CS make the move? Are you out there, CS?

Frank,
I dunno, he's pretty open minded; once there's some proof.....

I'm here. Dano tried this back during the heat of the discussion and said it worked. Good enough for me. I assume he's been using it ever since.
I still use pumice and rottenstone, since I don't trust the incipient ingredients of a freaking tube of toothpaste.
I still say you could polish varnish with your own excrement if you ate several Pixi Stix about six hours before you needed to go to work.
Hey, I just took delivery on a half-set of Clark and Williams hollows and rounds. Now that's something worth talking about.
Charles,
Congrats on the new planes; hope we get a review on them from you soon. Glad to see you at least lurk about here in the "new digs". After almost a month, 'bout the only thing I've learned about this new format is to take a couple of Advil before I bump around in here.....the eye strain is brutal. Oh, and please go easy on my spelling, the spell check here doesn't work. ;-)
Andy Charron...hmmmm.....is he the editor that thought an article on sanding after hand planing and scraping would be "enlightening"? :-)

No, that was another guy I think. At least I hope.
To set the record straight, I am not an editor and do not work for Taunton. I have written 3 books for them and numerous articles for FW, mostly finishing related. As for the toothpaste, I did test it (though not as extensively as Bill)and found it worked no better or worse than rottenstone or any other very fine rubbing compound. My one complaint was that it left behind a minty smell that took several days to fade away. As for the article on sanding after scraping, that was not me.

Andy,
Thanks for setting the record straight. Likewise, I'm aware that you were not the author of that article; just unaware of who the editor was that decided to run it...
As to toothpaste, I "reported" on it during the original discussion, while my little test was not as thorough as William's I did find that Crest Extra Whitening (Clean Mint) yeilded excellent results and the smell, while I thought it pleasant, lasted less than a day and was (is) far more pleasant an oder then some of the "things" we use, namely animal guts, bones, and skin.....hide glue.

So Dano, did you use it straight from the tube or the sink...LOL. I've used it for years. Works great to polish brass when you can't have flamables around. Just about the same as rotten stone. The whitening brands are a little heavier abrasive so you could actually grade it if you wanted.
You could start with the whitening brand then move to the finer non-whitening brand and finish it off with a quick rinse in the ole denture cleaner to get rid of the after smell.
You know I meant that in humor but dang it just might work.

Steve,
Straight out of the tube the stuff out of the sink is too crusty, IMO. My better half uses Crest Regular Paste. Like you I found the Whitening to give better results. If I need a "finer" grit, I just "thin" it down by putting a gob in my mouth, tastes a lot better than pumice, the technique of "sraying" it on does take some practice though.
As a side benefit, my Altoid purchases have been cut back and I have much better dental check ups.....

Which one of the FW editors.... Andy Charron I believe..... tried toothpaste and was unimpressed..... ????
