Anyone have any patent experience? I have an idea for a tool improvement but don’t have the funds to pull or protect a patent. I have submitted the tool idea to a major tool manufacturer and it sounds like the idea has made it past the first round of review. I am curious if anyone has any experience in this arena.

I would suggest you consult with an attorney that specializes in intellectual property.

Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.

Hi.
First thing first.
Get one inventors note book.
And document the invention as much as you can.
You can find an inventors note book in Amazon or any good book store.
good luck.

Oneuik1,
I have 3 U.S. patents. All were processed through my primary employer. Experianced patent legal help is needed. I understand the legal cost for a patent search, technical writers, and legal fees come to about $10K. This patent search may lead to a patent with "current art" which means your idea is pre-dated by someone else. If your idea is at least 10% different than the "current art" you have a chance of patent approval. Plan on a year or two for the legal legwork. I don't know the legal details well, my employer took care of these issues.
You need to figure out if your future royalties will cover your cost.
