Howdy,
At a yard sale I just purchased better than a half ton of teak. The boards were used to crate furniture over seas from south east Asia. They have been sitting in a garage since the 1960’s. Most of the boards are approximately 5/8,8 in, 2 ½ ft. They have mail holes, and they had a lot of mouse terds on them. Other then that they look great.
Do you have any suggestions for finishing these boards? Should they be sealed first? If so can I use a sealer that brushes on? Are there special gluing considerations to keep in mind with teak?
I have not worked with teak before, but I couldn’t pass it up.
Thanks

Routersky,
The first thing I would be concerned with is cleaning it. Soap and water is a wonderful thing.
Your finish depends on what you planning on building. Is it a chair outside or a dining table etc. etc.
There are many different finishes that can be brushed. A shellac sealer followed by a varnish finish will be beautiful on a dining table.
Many prefer to let teak remain unfinished in the exterior environment. It will weather a silvery grey. Others prefer a penetrating oil such as Cabot, Olympic etc.
It all depends on what you are using it for.
