I’m putting together my TS and could use some advice. What is a good material to make the box out of that goes around the end of motor. I need to enclose it so the dust extractor will work. Is 1/2″ plywood adequate or should I go to 3/4″?
I noticed that there is a space around the height adjustment crank where some air is going to be sucked in. Is this no big deal? The hole is about 1 1/2″X 8″. It would be hard to seal because the crank moves when you adjust the tilt for the saw.
Thanks in advance!

Dear friend,
I am not familiar with your plan, but sounds like your box will move with the motor.
In that case, mass (buidl-up) of that wood trunnion is important because of possible motor vibrations and load-stresses. If your trunnion is made say of 2x4's you'd get mass from those and the cover thickness would not be very relevant.
If you get vibrations, in the motor trunnion, that'd mean that you'd get vibrations at the blade, a terrible thing to happen. Try the trunnion without any covers first, and make sure all runs smooth. Then you figure out covers. You ought to use the table without any covers first and to see where you want to put the dust ports from observing how every thing works first, including how trunnion moves up and down.
Also, in case you have not considered it, MAKE SURE you use a totally enclosed fan-cooled motor TEFC, else, you'll have troubles with dust and chips getting into the centrifugal contacts.

1/4 inch will work with a frame. Should not be necessary to close up the slot around the hieght adjustment.
High air volume dust colectors will will work with the motor covers off and vacs work better with the covers on.
