Hi
I want to change the tint on a wood table top from a less orange to a more brown color.
How does one refinish over a polyurathan type clear finish. The colour if faded but the table would be great with some work. Do you need to sand down and start fresh or can you sand and blend a finish over the poly.
Thanks

It all depends on your skill level.
The coating can be sanded with 220 or 320 paper to prepare it. You can then use an appropriate gel stain that is thinned to a workable consistency and applied to the surface. Once fully dry you can re coat it as required.
This is called glazing. I would strongly suggest you read about it in one of the finishing books to educate yourself. It will be time well spent. Then practice what you have read on some scrap wood. It's a lot better than practicing on the table.
If the finish is relatively thin it may be a better option to remove it and start over.
Good luck.
