Re: Dewalt DW106 Electric Drill with keyless chuck.
I broke the keyless chuck on my drill and purchased a replacement for the chuck. You are supposed to be able to remove the old one by locking a hex wrench in the chuck and striking it with a hammer to rotate it counter clockwise.
Since the locking lugs on the inside of the chuck had broken, the only thing the wrench could hold on to was the hex head socket deep inside the chuck . After a number of unsuccessful tries, the wrench was stripped and the chuck remains intact. Does anyone have a suggestion how I can remove the old chuck.
Or, should I just chuck the whole thing? Funny Funny.

You might want to soak the hex nut with WD40 over night and try an easy-out to remove the nut. See if the easy-out fits first.good luck.
The screw in the bottom of the chuck is left hand thread, you need to turn it clockwise to loosen it. Once the screw is out you chuck up the hex key in the chuck and go counterclockwise to remove it.

Jig, if there is a retainer screw holding the chuck , remove it-usually they are left hand threaded, and sometimes they are installed with a thread locking compound, as if the chuck is going to last forever....
Then, since the chuck is history, grip it with a light pipe wrench or vice grips, and give the wrench/vise grip a good whack in counter-clockwise direction.
I am yet to understand why the makers of these tools handicap them with inferior chucks.
Try shooting a good penetrating oil into the chuck [Such as moovit or PB blaster (automotive supplier)] and using an impact driver(such as this one; http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=55987&cat=1,43411,43417&ap=1) An impact driver is a super handy thing to have anyways (for anything from taking apart your table saw to loosening stuck suspension components on your 1970 Dodge Dart) and it ought to make the task at hand a cinch.
