starting my own business have a small shop about to build bigger one on my property. what is a good size for a workshop to include future plans and run a business out of?

There is no simple answer, and the layout of the shop is usually more critical than the simple square footage. Some people seem to need four times the floor space that another furniture maker finds adequate, it has a lot to do with how you work.
A one man shop making high end solid wood furniture and relying on hand tools would be set up completely different from a shop making kitchen cabinets for instance, and the kitchen cabinet operation would need more floor space. If you are planning to have employees that will also change things a lot.
I would suggest that you go back to the annual "Tool and Shop" issues of Fine Woodworking and look at the range of shops that others use. Taunton also publishes a book called "Setting Up A Shop" that you would probably find helpful.
