Hello folks !
I’ve got a woodworking tool problem that is causing me grief. I have a Bostitch CWC 156 compressor that I bought a few years ago. I bought it as a kit (CPAK100 I think). Anyway, the Start/Run Capcitor has gone south and the authorized repair shops say it will cost 53-55 bucks for the replacement part. We’re not talking about installation here, just the part.
The cap is a 60mfd 330V, two pole (1/4″ quick connect), bottom mount, plastic case unit and I have found similar 53-64mfd 330V caps at Grainger and a few other places. I would prefer a direct replacement but would accept a suitable unit if available. The Grainger price was about 8 bucks plus a 2 watt drain resistor (about 1.00 each).
Can anyone advise on a suitable replacement cap or where I might find an OEM cap that is more realistically priced.
Thanks Much
James

The Start/Run caps you found at Graingers will work fine and probably better than the original. I've never seen a drain resistor being used on a Start/Run cap. Wouldn't hurt, just not sure it would be necessary. I'd get two so you have a spare. Might even check your other critical motors and go ahead and get spares for them.

Thank you. I was really having a hard time swallowing a 50.00 price tag on a 10.00 part. BTW, the drain resistor keeps the contacts in the pressure switch from arcing. Usually a 2 watt resistor soldered across the cap poles will do the trick.
My Delta 1200 cfm DC had the cheesyiest capacitors on the motor you ever saw. I had to replace both of them in the 1st year. Nothing but pure Taiwan crapola!

Can't say that mine was not my fault. I ran it for three days on a 100' extension cord in 105deg weather doing siding with a Hitachi 83A nailgun. After that it started having problems getting going in the mornings and now I have to take the cover off and spin the fan by hand to motivate it. All in all its been really good and was certainly saving me money on those days by not having to rent a bigger compressor.
Thanks for the help, I found the replacement part at York Capcitors. About 30.00 with shipping and all. That still saves me 20.00+

About a month ago the outside coil cooling fan quit working on one of our central AC's. It was corrosion on the spade connector on the starting capacitor. I put a little dielectric grease on the connector and the unit's now working fine. Another penalty for living in the tropics!

Before you waste money on a new capacitor, are you sure that the centrifugal starter switch isn't sticking? You would expect the motor shop to sort this out, but stranger things have happened. A sticking switch would cause the symptoms you described. Why buy the capacitor at York when the one from Grainger costs under $10.00?

John, there is no centrifigal starter switch on this particular motor. Its a simple single phase induction motor. My Cap tester shows that the cap is bad and my manual testing system of charging the cap and then zapping my brother in the rear doesn't work either. He just looks at me funny and say's "Watch it buddy".
Thanks for the thoughts though..
P.S. Grainger doesn't seem to have a run cap in their catalog that fits the specs of the original. They have caps that fit the specs but not run caps. Best I can figure is that the run caps have a 3 sec. discharge rate and the others don't, (I'm not 100% clear on this subject). I have sent them an email and I'm waiting for a response. Yorks price of 25.00 plus 5.00 shipping is fair and is comparable to buying it locally before their markup.
