Does anybody have experience with this plane? FWW just did a review and didn’t give it high marks, but I don’t always agree with them. I’d really like a reasonably priced shoulder plane and most of the user reviews are fairly upbeat.

Toys or Tools?
I am not exactly sure which version of the Stanley 92 that you refer to. Post a link please. If you are talking about this one

I have one of these from about fifteen years ago. Yes a person can make furniture with it.
But
Nah dude nah
The plating flakes off, not too bad but still. Why plate it anyway ? And it is pretty basic. Unless you are doing house carpentry, what have you, I would look elsewhere.
I have a couple of Lie-Neilsons, one of the largest all metal and one of the little skinny bronze and wood infilled (which I am quite taken by).
If I were to do it again I would buy one of these, or what ever size suits the work you plan to do:

Too expensive ?
Nope . . . just right ! I would certainly pay more. These are brilliantly designed and manufactured. Worth the wait.
PS: sorry about the weird quality of the photos I was chasing the diminishing natural light through the house and lost the race.
That's the one....
That is the Stanley I was looking at. Too many negatives for me to keep considering it.
I've only bought 1 Lie-Nielsen plane http://www.lie-nielsen.com/catalog.php?sku=71 but have to say I love it. Why would you buy the Veritas instead?
It seems to me . . .
. . . that Stanley is trying to make a come-back after several decades of making less-than-adequate tools. Whether they will be able to do that and return to their pre-WWII quality level is yet an open question. The current Stanley planes may be better than Roc's 12-year old version, I don't know. Hopefully, someone who has purchased one of the new ones will come along.
The Lie Nielsen U.S.-made planes are quality tools following traditional designs. The Canadian-made Veritas planes are also quality tools, with a sprinkle of new design bells and whistles. The choice between them is probably a matter of personal taste. Personally, I think the Lie Nielsen planes are slightly better, quality-wise, but I also like some of the Veritas design innovations.
