All,
I just bought a Stanley 76 mortise gauge. A few questions for those of you who have the same or similiar tool with the Traut 1872 patented design: when you back-out the pin adjusting wheel, the threaded shaft extends from the wood stock. Does the brass slide containing the movable pin follow? Or, do you have to pull the rod out too? In otherwords, is the brass slide captured on the threads such that turning the knob in either direction causes the slide to follow in and out?
I ask because i wonder if my 76 is missing a part, or some piece is broken.

Thanks!

I think you are missing part(s)
I bought a restoration basket case #79, which is similar to the one in the patent PDF. The slide was broken at the bend by the thumb screw, the shoe was missing, and the pins are almost completely worn away. On mine there is a small brass collar just below the ring where the screw goes through the slide. If you are missing that piece, the slide will not move with the thumbscrew. Hopefully you don't have a broken slide like mine.
Here is the link for the original listing on e-bay, with some pretty good photographs, check photos #3 and #6..

I had to take the collar off in order to isolate the pieces for silver brazing to repair the broken part, and I was able to move it down the threads as if it were a nut.. If a person were handy they could make a new part out of brass tubing with very little trouble.
I was able to silver braze the two pieces back together and re-assembled the slide to the thumbscrew. The collar would not remain in place until I staked it lightly to the shaft of the thumbscrew. I also made a new shoe out of brass stock, and will make new pins from a #54 twist drill shank.
If you would like I can probably find a way to get photos of the slide and thumbscrew to you.
Chuck Ward.
