Hi all
I’m interested in learning to sharpen my own handsaws, and have been reading through the sharpening pages at vinatge saws.
The author reccomends the Stanley 42X, can anyone tell me from the photo attached if this a 42 or a 42X, it’s up for sale on an auction site and unfortunatily the vendor can’t tell me much about the item.

The 42X number doesn't appear in the Stanley catalogs I've looked through but they got the X designation because the letter "X" appears next to the number 42 on the casting inside of the handle and underneath the main casting just behind the area that the saw blade goes into when using the tool. So the simple answer is that a 42X should have 42X marks on it.
Thanks for the reply John, The seller was only asking a few dollars for the set so I went a head and made the purchase.
Interestingly enough the seller emailed me and said he had another very similar one which had a slightly different action he described a bushing which extended out as well as the anvil when squeesed which I suspect may be the 42X.
I have been looking for some years in New Zealand for one of these so it will be interesting to see exactly what they are, anyway no more excuses for sending my saws out to be sharpened!
