I just received a brand new Stanley 12-960 Low Angle Block Plane.
I’m a newbie with hand tools but the Quick-release cam-lock makes iron removal real easy but it does not clamp down on the iron sufficiently to prevent the iron from moving.
I’ve gone to their website tried to chat and sent them email but no response not even an acknowledgment of my reaching out to them.
Questions:
1. Is this something I can remedy myself and if so how?
2. Is this a defect and should I return the product
3. This was a gift (purchased from Lee Valley) but I have no receipt and asking for it would be very embarrassing.

whyowhy,
Right in front of the cam lock, on top of the plane, is a slotted screw. Try turning it clockwise just a bit and see if that does the trick.
Good luck!

I tried that. I have tightened as for as it can go. It feels like it bottomed out.
Hmmmm.....
Take the screw out and check to see if there is a piece of debris in the hole. If not, try putting a washer under the head of the screw. If that works, it may mean that the hole didn't get drilled , or threaded, deep enough.
Certainly wouldn't hurt to call Lee Valley and ask them about it. They might help, even without a receipt.

Stanley is really good at not responding to questions. It sounds like you have a defective tool. If you have a packing slip from Lee Valley just give them a call and they will take care of it. Otherwise, call them anyway and give them as much information as you can about who the purchaser was and if possible what day they made the purchase. Otherwise, if there is a woodworking club near you see if someone who knows their way around Stanley planes would take a look at it. Short of that, you can either be embarrassed and contact the gift giver, try calling Stanley instead of emailing them, or call Highland Woodworking and buy a new lever cap (they carry a lot of new Stanley plane parts).

Turns out that the screw that holds down the cap is a few threads too long so that it bottoms out before completely tightening the cap.
I placed a lock washer between the cap and the screw head and that seems to do the trick.
Lee Valley was very supportive and was willing to take it back without the receipt.
On the other hand my disappointment with Stanley (lack of response and quality) will certainly carry over to my next non-purchase of their products.
