I am in the process of staining a red cedar book shelf and I’m wanting to get I deep some what dark final finish, but I want to be able to see the grains? Any suggestions on what type of stain oil based or what ….? My other furniture is a dark walnut color….. Any suggestions are appreciated…

Forget the pigmented stains
Go for a good water or alcohol base wood die. You can mix it weak and darken as needed and you will not muddy up the grain of the lumber with those stupid pigments. Pigmented stains are nice if you want to accent grain patterns.
