   I wouldn't be terribly worried with using a waterborne stain because they do dry so quickly.  But I avoid waterborne stains because they are so are to work with to achieve an even color.  It's very hard to get them applied and wiped off evenly on objects of any size.  Oil based stains are so much easier to work with.
