We just got our house insurance bill, and I’m totally shocked at their estimated replacement cost, figured at `~$225/sq ft. This is a random ranch, built in 1961, to spec-house standards.
I’d be interested in thoughts as to current sq/ft pricing.
Thank you!

Ed,
Ours recently came in at approx. 200.00/sq.ft, causing a dramatic increase in our home insurance premiums..
I almost fell off my chair, but a call to the original custom builder validated this. Going price ranges from 175.00 to 250.00 ( low end quality to high end quality).
Not much we can do..
Maybe shop around but I have a feeling these rates are industry wide.

Forgot to mention...
I wonder if these premium increases have anything to do with the state of the stock markets today. I read that insurance companies only really make money by investing the premiums. So if they've been hit hard by the market downturn, the only recourse for them maybe is to hike premiums to the absolute limit.
Just my opinion..

...for those whose mortgages have gone topsy turvy...seems like a viable alternative to bankruptcy and then we all pay to clean up the toxic mess, again.

I would say you are correct. And I wonder why they all get away with what I call 'Price Fixing'.. I thought that was a Federal Crime?
But then again, I sort of understand, the prices they charge. WE ALL PAY for the EXPECTED OTHERS that lost everything. The insurance companies pay the loss.
If WE are the looser.. WE WELCOME IT..
I hope the point is understood...
