A contractor has asked me about a redwood platform around an indoor bathtub, wanting me to glue together a slab measuring 7′ x 6′, approximately. I explained to him about wood movement over that wide an expanse. So he wants me to come up with another idea.
My question is, where can I get info on redwood, like how much movement he can expect, after it’s sealed and finished with a poly topcoat?
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Redwood specs. Tangential shrinkage in/ft 5/32". Radial shrinkage in/ft 3/32". These numbers are based on a 7% change in moisture content.

Thanks, Bruce. Just what I was looking for. Where did you get that info? That's what I'd like at my fingertips.

That info came with my moisture meter. (Timber Check, moisture meter)

OK, didn't think of that.
Thanks

You might want to rethink a film finish on a hot tub surround. Film finishes are very slippery when wet. Wet bare feet on a varnish surface will be like ice. A better choice is an oil/varnish like teak oil or, even better, no finish at all. Unfinished redwood is basically non-skid.
I agree, Howard. That's what they said they were going to finish it with. Maybe I can talk them out of it. Personally, I'd like to see Honduras mahogany; with the design of the bathroom, I think it'd look much better.
Thanks,
Jerry
I believe there is a trade association that the redwood lumber companies have I think I have seen adds for it in Fine woodworking. Another thing to consider is that redwood is almost always very soft (softer than pine) so while it might not rot in the situation you are talking about any film finish will be easy to damage. I would second the idea of mahogany or even teak or ipe.

Thanks Troy. The softness is something I need to bring up with them. Cabinets are cherry, and with the style, mahogany would be the ticket, I think. I'll mention teak and ipe to them, also.
Just a side note I used some ipe for some drawer fronts for my workbench and put several coats of poly on them and they have a really nice color you might want to try some sample pieces for them.Troy
Thanks, Troy. I'll be talking to them tomorrow, and I'm going to give them these alternatives that have been discussed.
