That said, commercial inlays are different than the originals or the ones you can make yourself. For example paterae or oval fans are made in the original with segments where the grain all runs out from the center. The grain all runs one direction in the commercial versions. The commercial inlays use about 1/32" thick veneer, where the originals typically would have used 1/16" thick veneer, the same thickness as veneer used in other places. Actually not as hard to make as you might think, mostly they require some SHARP cutting tools, including chisels or gouges.
