The soft maple that I have purchased in the past has, what I have described as “flames” throughout it. The markings are not spalting nor are they knots. Usually dark brown or grayish, length varies about 4 inches and usually a lazy “S” shape.
Can anybody tell me what the figuring is ?

It might be what they call ambrosia maple. There's usually some up for bid on eBay. Try doing a search there and check some pics to see if that's what you're after.
If you build it he will come.
Thanks so much for the info. Lots of information via Google. The Ambrosia beetle invades the wood hence the small holes which are also common with the dark stains. The stains are caused by funguses which the beetle introduces into the wood.
Zander,
Sounds like what is called "mineral streaks" around here.
