Does anyone have experience with the 4 to 6 hp electric splitters? Sears has the Mantis, Then there is the Omega, etc.
Any advice is appreciated.

Wow! That's a serendipitous query! I am also looking for an electric log splitter as I have decided my back just ain't what it used to be. I do not like to shop at the Home Depot, but I'm leaning towards the Ryobi splitter there as it seems to get almost 100% positive reviews. You might look at Grizzly too.
Curious to see what responses you get.

Dear Tom,
How about DR: http://www.drpower.com/TwoStepCategory.aspx?Name=WoodSplitter2Step&LinkType=3&BC=0&Redirect=true
I have bought from them and one thing that does not come across in their advertisements is the over all "over engineering". Try it for six months and if you don't like it, you can return it. Good customer service as well.
Best,
John
I got one as a christmas gift two years ago. It was marketed by Fisch. I think its the same as the DR. Its made in China. Mine is the 5 ton model.
For its size, it works well. On some very nasty knotted pieces over about 12" - especially oak, it struggles and won't make the split. So I have at it with those pieces and the much larger sections with the Maul and sledge.
but for all other logs, it does the job fine. I've split a good bit of wood with it already, as is holding up fine so far.
The Sears splitter is only around 1.5 HP not 5 to 6 HP. It basic construction appears to be identical to the Ryobi which costs only $199.00.
I have the Ryobi and it works very well up to 8 to 10 inch diameter logs 16 inches long. Occasionally it will split a larger log if it is straight grained.

The Ryobi is $299, not $199 (unfortunately) as I've been looking to buy it.

Thought I paid $199.00 just a couple of months ago, I'll have to dig out the receipt.John W.
I'm very well pleased with my ryobi splitter.
