Hello,
I’m currently constructing a Queen size cherry bed and will be incorporating slats for supporting the matress. What I’m trying to determine is what wood should I use for the slats. I’ve seen many plans that say “cut slats to size and you’re ready to finish” but they don’t mention exactly what type of wood is used.
The distance the boards will be spanning is about 63 inches. I’ve drawn up plans to use 1×5 poplar boards (partly out of cost I chose poplar), believing that should be thick enough, but I’d hate to find out they aren’t the hard way. Do I need to use a hardwood, such as oak or maple, or can I get by with a softer wood such as poplar? I’ve come across some cheap Alder boards. Would they work?
Any feedback from people would be greatly appreciated!

Poplar will be more than adequate. Use S4S (PAR-- call it what you prefer) 1" X 4" machined to size at the yard to save you time at the machines, pick out the straightest bits, space each about an inch apart, add a central tie bar from headboard to footboard, and you'll be all set up for years of vigorous sexual gymnastics, and other games. With a bit of clicking you'll find a bed of mine made exactly this way-- and it's holding up just fine, thanks. Slainte, RJ.
