question: after having looked at the”free” sketchup pro 6 download the time frame of use is very limited, where can one find the free version? thanks to any help here.

It is the "pro" part that is causing you the problem. It is the one that is for sale. At their website you should be able to find the non-pro form which is free period and is more than adequate for what we want to use. Here is the link: http://www.sketchup.com/ The one on the right is the proper one.
If you really need the "Pro" version, I'm afraid you'll have to pay. The regular version is free forever and has almost all of the same features. The main thing it lacks is the ability to print on a plotter. If you have a plotter you need the "Pro".

Pro also allows exports high resolution images, animations, CAD and a few other file types not available in the free version. It also comes with Layout, a presentation application.
Still, for the average user, the free version has plenty of capability.
