I am presently using Sketchup Pro 8. Would like advice if there is any compelling reason to upgrade to 2014 Pro?
Thanks

Hi Rob,
Well, it kind of depends. SU2014 has had a lot of bug fixes, there's the Extension Warehouse which makes it easier to install plugins from the SketchUp extension repository, there've been other improvements such as a few new tools and improved import/export of other file types. You can also create custom toolbars so you can leave out tools you don't use and save some screen real estate. Probably biggest noticeable differences are in LayOut. If you use LayOut, you'll find LO2014 is much faster when rendering SketchUp viewports and there are additional options for text. You can even get automated hyphens in dimensions if you want them.
As far as I can see, there's no reason not to upgrade.

Thanks
Thank you Dave for the response, will probably take your advice.

Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite beware
I had just upgraded my Mac to Yosemite prior to posting. When I tried to open Sketchup 8 it immediatly crashed, subsusquant attempts also failed. Looking on the web for a solution didnt help, found plenty of posts reporting problems including 2014 . According to the Sketchup site OSX 10.10 is an unsupported environment. http://forums.sketchup.com/t/should-i-upgrade-to-os-x-yosemite/2189
Out of desperation I completly deleted Sketchup 8 from my Mac. Here are instructions, it is not a matter of simply moving the program to trash: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36209
I then installed Sketchup 2014 Pro trial version. Everything seemed to work ok. I went ahead and purchased the upgrade and so far everything is OK, but definitely a bullet dodged.
I have been complacent about Upgrading software since switching to the Mac a couple of years ago- everything seems to work. No more however, after this "Microsoft" like event. I will be more wary in the future.
By the way if you have Time machine for the mac you can undo the update, however I did not.
Hope this helps someone.
Another reason to not upgrade Mac OS
I do not need the Pro version of Sketchup (yet!) and find the 'free' version to be more than adequate. Thanks for the tip on Yosemite - I will stay with Mountain Lion until itbecomes to vulnerable due to Apple Support going away.
I was reluctant to upgrade anyway since my son-in-law spent 3 days with a white screen on his iMac when he tried to upgrade to Yosemite from Maverick. Apparently, others on the web also experienced Apple's "WHITE SCREEN OF DEATH" similar to Microsoft's blue screen of death from years back.

Yosemite has caused problems for quite a few SketchUp users. Well, and users of other programs, too. Of course SketchUp 2014, as well as earlier versions, was compiled before Apple made anything about Yosemite available to developers. SU2014 is probably better suited to the Yosemite OS although some users have reported issues; mostly relating to changing fonts. I've held off on upgrading my Mac to Yosemite because it works as is and I figured I'd wait.
Considering that it is nearing the end of 2014 and the Trimble has committed to annual version releases, it is extremely unlikely there'll be any more revisions to SU2014 so any changes related to how SketchUp plays with Yosemite will surely not appear until SU2015.
Why can't I clear my head of the image of a very short cowboy with bushy red moustache and a huge hat? :D
