Hi – I have a fairly large shower and am 77 years old. I would like to sit under that shower but need a stool. I have seen them advertised but they want a fortune for them. I have a piece of redwood that is 1″ X 5-1/8″ X 10’0″ in size and would like to build such a stool. No. 1 – Is redwood suitable for such a project? No. 2 – Is the size of this piece suitable? No. 3 – Does anyone know of any plans to make such a stool?
I have been making various cabinets, coffee tables, console tables, buffets, etc. for the last 10 years and can do almost everything except handcut dovetails.
Thank you in advance for your replies.

I would avoid redwood, too many splinters!!!!!!!!!!!
I would use Trex decking and stainless steel screws. I works like lumber and you won't have to worry about putting any finish on it.
Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

I agree with Bruce regarding splinters, as redwood splinters very easily as it degrades over time. You can make it work, but you have to be diligent in first treating the wood with a good penetrating oil finish, and then renewing that finish regularly.

Bruce has a good idea. Trex/ hardwood legs. Maybe a split tenon with a wedge through the seat on a four legger.

Here's a link to a stool make by a Japanese woodworker to be used in bathing activities. He made his out of hinoko” (Japanese Cypress).
Interesting description of its use as well.

Japanese baths also usually have a grid of wooden duckboards that you stand on while showering. I'm not sure what they're made of, but it could be hinoki. Whatever they are, they're always smooth and splinter-free, and actually very comfortable.
Port Orford Cedar and Atlantic White-cedar are North American relatives of hinoki, and might work similarly.

The wife & kids got me a chair for my shower for fathersday last year. I don't know if you have a bed bath & beyond, but thats where it came from. Its made of powdercoated legs & the seat is teak. I like the thing. I can sit and the hot water & jet shower head does wonders for the back. I aked a few moments ago and she indicated it was not outrageously priced.
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Thanks Bones. We have a Bed, Bath & Beyond here and I will look into it. I need it for my back also.
