New to Knots, usually post questions over on Breaktime when looking for good info on commercial construction techniques, or on working commercial steel doors and hardware etc. Ran into a problem and I’m banging my head against a wall so I figured best thing to do is ask pros over here for help. Here is what is going on. Sister-in-law has real nice looking sowing room with about 16′ of nice looking cabinets mounted on walls and wants to add adjustable shelves under them. In some areas she wants to be able to have “cubby holes” and in some areas “bins” or slide in drawers. Long ago I had a great book that had great info on how to design shelves. Just moved and now I can’t find the book. It had phenomenal info on finding length, depth, thickness of different types of stock or material to support varying weights. Lots of different types of ways to attach adjustable shelves to walls. Lots of different types of layout designs and configurations. GREAT BOOK. CAN’T FIND IT!! AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!! Who out there knows where I can acquire this type of book or info? This will be a considerable scope of a project, and its been too long since I’ve done finish and trim work to be able to wing it. All the books I’ve been finding are just on cabinets NOT shelves. HHHEEELLLPPP!!! Cork in Chicago |

Cork, can't help you with the book, but The Sagulator below will help you with matching weight load with shelf distance and thickness:

FG,
You little gem, I lost the link to the sagulator after my HD hit the dust. Have been looking in vain for it for a couple of weeks & I was about to post a request on Knots.
Thanks a ton
Don
Don, so glad I could help. Here's a hint for the future (or present, if you lost all your bookmarks): GOOGLE!!!! http://www.google.com It'll find stuff like that faster than any other search engine. I have the Google toolbar at the top of my browser, so don't even have to go to their site when seeking a reference.
Condolences on your dead HD. Knock-on-oak-desk, I've not had that happen...yet!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Take a look here and see if your book's listed:

Hey there Forestgirl,
Thanks for the links. The first one worked good and gave me some more leads. I'll order it and keep searching for more info.
I was up visiting with sister-in-law (Nancy) and we will just keep getting more and more info for the adjustable wall mounted shelves with cubby holes, bins, etc.. and when we feel good about our knowledge base we'll build them.
In the mean time her hubby (my brother Dave) needs his deck fixed. We pulled up a couple of 1" x 6" planks and checked out underneath. Nice PT lumber in good shape for beams, but the surface planks had been spaced to closely together, and therefor held water and have started to rot. This coming weekend we'll pull them up, pull a few strings, and use PLS5, shim if need be and resurface with new PT lumber.
So anyway we've still got a project to work on till we're ready for the shelf project.
Thanks a bunch Forestgirl,
Cork in Chicago
Cork, good to know you won't have "idle hands" getting you in trouble before shelf-building time! (BTW, that was one link, the composition box split it into 2 I guess).
Have fun with the deck. We need to do ours, but it'll involve replacing alot of the support beams too, yuck.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
