Hi all
Probably a simple question for most of you but I am having a great deal of trouble sharpening an oval skew chisel. I have a wet grinder (sheppach) and an excellent dry grinder with right stones and guides but still can’t get it right. I don’t know if I should just offer up at the correct angle or swing with the shape whatever I do I burn the top corner. I am sure many of you fine furniture makers must turn some of your own components as well so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation….DanF

Dan, ask this question at Recreational woodturning. You will get excellent responses there. I have never tried to grind an oval skew, I freehand hone the skew on a diamond stone. Sorby may be able to help you with information on grinding an oval skew. I do grind all other lathe tools on a 6" grinder with a white friable wheel, then sometimes go to a slow speed 10x2" wheel ( 70 rpm).I found the slowspeed grinder is perfect for regular skews and parting tools. Gouges are done on the 6" wheel (3450 rpm).
I get Rec.Woodturning from google search, Some newsgroups are not available to me the usual way.
