I am just guessing, but I think your shaper turns way too fast to use as a sander. You will burn everything.
Also, I don't think you will want sanding grit inside of your shaper.

Good point. I guess my initial thought was that I should try to use a machine that I already own that would appear to do the job. Thanks.
Based on what Jerry said, cost wise you would actually be better off buying a little oscillating spindle sander.
The oscillating thing actually is pretty important. It does a much better job of sanding and is also easier on the sanding sleeve.
I do know that the little Delta B.O.S.S. sanders only turn at 1750 RPM. Even at that it is pretty easy to burn the wood and the paper.

There is no good way- why murder a shaper for that? And what about the reciprocating action required for a decent spindle sander?
The machine to murder for that is one of those Oriental Bench Drills, which you can up-end, and fit a small motor with crank plus a modicum of ingenuity to the quill handle to get the reciprocating action.
Er, did you have a specific candidate for this plan? The nearest I can think of would be one of those baby Deltas with the three interchangeable spindles- and I would have to be mad to do it, since it was actually quite a useful small shaper....Philip Marcou

Felder has various size drums that are made for their shapers that turn them into spindle sanders. Of course they do not oscillate and you need to be able to select a low speed. My Hammer saw/shaper has a 3600 rpm speed just for this purpose. I think MiniMax also has a drum available but is was $245 in my old price list. The Felder drums are in the Christmas Special catalog and are now on sale. The 60 mm drum is $113.40.
Life is what happens to you when you're making other plans .
