Hi All
We want our new shaker style kitchen cabinets to go right to the ceiling. There will be a 2″ to 3″ gap to fill above the cabinets.
It seems to me that the usual crown moulding is too fancy for the shaker style .
How would you close the gap and remain true to the style?

Why leave the 2-3" gap at the ceiling? Could you build them right up to the ceiling and scribe the top of the face frame?
Stewie,
Decrease the gap to about 1", apply a flat band 3/4" thick to the ceiling right at the cabinets and then fill the gap between with a simple cove moulding. Overhang the band enough so that there is a step from the front edge of the cove moulding and the band. This should be an easy installation and will give you an authentic Shaker detail. Even though my cabinets did not go all the way to the ceiling, I used a similar detail as you can see in the attached pics.

Ronaway, I'm finishing up some built-ins with a cove molding arrangement identical to what you did. Did you chamfer the edges of that 3/4" flat piece above the cove molding or leave the edges at 90 degrees? I'm trying to picture it both ways.Norman
nboucher,I left the edge of the band at 90 degrees but I knocked the corners off with a block plane and then rounded them over by hand with some sandpaper. I think the key to making this style look complete and right is to inset the doors and drawer fronts. I think full overlay doors and drawers diminish the profile of the top. Partial inset with less overlay would be better but not optimum. When everything is inset and flush it's all just so much cleaner and Shaker elegant.RonIf you're too open minded your brains will fall out.
Stewie,
Ronaway is on the right track. Even a simple, flat moulding that isn't too thick with a chamfer will give the visual weight it needs.

I build the cabinet boxes up to the ceiling, stop the face frames at the crown and infill between the crown and ceiling with 1/2 in plywood covered with 3/8 sheetrock and tape it to the ceiling. The fact the F/F are 3/4 and the sheetrock 7/8 doesn't show as it breaks at the crown
