I am looking for someone who uses Tormek and its SVD-185 jig, and has determined the JS / P / Hole settings for various Sorby turning tools.
Now, before you start telling me to sharpen them however I like and get to turning, please don’t bother. I am not experienced enough yet and want to keep the profiles of the tools I bought. I am sure that once I get more experience I’ll be able to sharpen them freehand or whatever, etc.
But, in the meantime, I have a Sorby 840FH, 1/2″ Fingernail Spindle Gouge, and would like to keep the profile it has come with. Does anyone know what the proper settings ( PS / P / Hole) are for that tool?
And others?
Thanks,
Alan – planesaw

read the Tormek manual again, use the black marker method.
The truth of the matter is you should just jump in and freehand the grinding; really it is not hard at all. In fact it is easier than turning is and you freehand that right? The factory profiles are just a start anyway so keeping them is no big deal as you’ll want to change them soon enough. And remember, turning tools are consumables in the shop. They require far more frequent sharpening than any other tool and get used up pretty fast compared to a plane iron. I have had a 3/8 bowl gouge ground down to nothing in a year. Also turning is by its nature a fast endeavor so learning to grind fast keeps the rhythm going, jigs take far, far too long. Also I have never honed a turning tool; they are fine straight off the 60 grit wheel.
Go for it, you enjoy the freedom.
