I’ve a simple but frustrating problem: buying a switch to surface-mount inside a lighted display cabinet. Just want a simple (but not ugly) small on-off button. Know any sources? Thanks.

You might look in electronics supply places, like http://www.digikey.com. They have zillions of little switches, so one of them should do whatever you want. You may have to build a housing to enclose it, but it could be wood to match the inside of the cabinet.
Ugly is a subjective term for a switch. You talking toggle, rotary??? Those are pretty small and hide easily. You could go motion type switch so when you get close the light goes on. Any hardware store or http://www.mcmaster.com should be workable. You can take a common swith and hide it and make a wooden knob to work it. The only limit is your imagination. Put it behind or underneath something ot they make those infra-red remote buttons or even some kind of wireless where you have a small clicker like a car alarm button.
One solution may to be not use a switch. Buy one of those remote controls that are sold to turn on/off Christmas lights.
And, there's always "The Clapper".

http://www.x10.com has an assortment of remote-controlled switches and controllers. Their offerings include an outlet which replaces a standard wall outlet, with one remote-controlled plug and one standard plug. This could be controlled by a small surface-mounted controller mounted on a wall anywhere in the room. Another option would be to look into the controllers that work by simply touching a metallic part of a lamp. I'd think such a switch could be connected to something like a small brass screw with washer somewhere inside the cabinet.
That X10 site is the worst site I've ever seen for products. Never seen a site that featured bikini clad teens to sell products like that before. Pretty tasteless.
pownal,
I get the switch from the same supplier I get the display lighting from .
If you don't find what you want I can give you the phone # of a source here in Oregon that will ship to you .
Usually there is a system available that plugs into and links up together and allows a switch .
The switch I have been using is a very thin maybe 1/4" thick and 2" round touch pad with a small wire coming out that can be routed down and away or out of sight .
These small touch switches only cost about 20 - 25$.
Cabinet hardware suppliers should have what you need .
What region are you in ? someone may know a source near you.

The last one I did was from a Borg Expo store. Simple touch disk.
bored for wires, replaced contact disc with an Irish coin, routed to inset and done. Years ago though.Expos are gone, I think
