for those that have been following along, here is a shot of the Scrabble board that I’ve been working on…. It is ready to ship once I figure a good way to ship it safely.
For those of you that are able or patient, you can go to this link and see all the pics in larger form http://www.petedraganic.com/scrabble/scrabble.htm although this page may take some time to load.
Yes, I even sewed the nice velvet bag with the cord and tassles for the scrabble tiles.

Awesome. I can't begin to imagine the anxiety you'll experience when entrusting it to someone at FedEx or UPS. I don't know how far it has to go, but I think I'd add the cost of an airline ticket to the bill and deliver it personally. As an aside, I've had two guitars shipped to me that arrived with no problem. I shipped something once by putting the item in a plastic bag, then surounding it in the box with insulating spray foam. It seemed to work pretty well, but the reciepient has to be careful when breaking away the foam and if the foam gets through the plastic bag, it sticks to what's inside. Either way, insure it for 500 billion dollars!
I love the idea abouth the spray foam... although I don't know if I'd be brave enough to trial that method on this project... I'll probably pick up some styrofoam board and build a box around the piece and then cram it tightly into a cardboard box.
two of my primary concerns are the weight and the fact that it is on a turning base, so the is some hardware that could get beat up in transit and allow for movement also.
I've received some boxes in the past form UPS and they look like they dragged them behind the truck for the last 500 miles of the trip.
I'm also thinking that US mail may be safer.
anyway you slice it, I am sick over shipping it.

Pete,
For what it's worth, I buy a lot of stuff mail order because I live in the middle of BFE. Fed Ex takes WAY better care of their packages than UPS or the post office. I just got a package in from the post office and it was ripped open and they placed a piece of tape over the rip half-a$$ that said "we're sorry that your package got damaged in transit" Ship Fed-Ex and sleep tight, they will take good care of you. They have never let me down yet, and I pick them whenever possible.

thanks for the input... I may just take that advice.

I second the Fed X advise. We always use Fex X when shipping computer equipment. I've received a UPS box with tire marks on it before, there had use to be a mother board in it.
I have not had any problems with usps, I use them for shipping ebay stuff. My only complaint with us mail is the tracking is delayed or non existant.

Back in the day of huge stereo speakers, I had a very large pair of speakers that came in boxes with foam poured inserts in the top and bottom. Very simple to make and you can make them as deep as you wish. Take the box you choose to ship in, line the bottom with thin plastic film, 1 ml or less, spray the foam in, immediately cover with another layer of plastic, place the object to be shipped into the middle of the foam, and voila', custom molded shipping. Repeat for the top as well. I moved those speakers a jillion times and they never were damaged. Good luck--its a beautiful piece. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
Stellar! Great job. Could you provide link to where you got the stamps?
Shipping is easy. Wrap in paper. White paper looks great. Surround with bubble wrap. You can get it at Office max or such place. Pick big box and put bubble wrapped box in. Now cushion with peanuts so bubble is in middle of box with lots of space(filled with peanuts) around it.
Insurance will only cover the price the people paid for it, so don't think if something happens you can get five or ten time what they paid.
the bubble wrap would likely all pop the first time it was dropped... the scrabble board is very heavy.
I got the stamps online but just saw them for lway ess than half the price at JoAnn Fabric... for only like 9.00 on sale. The link I got them through cost like $27 with shipping at.... http://www.wilde-ideas.com/Vndrs/Herr/Scrabble.html
