Hello, I am trying to reschellac an old mahogany dresser top. I cleaned off some water marks and stains with alcohol and then tried to re coat it with schellac( 1# cut). It came out with patches of light milky clouds in the finish. Anyone know what to do about this or what happen to cause the cloudiness? What do I need to do to fix it? Thanks

I guess you are sure it is a shellac finish?
Yes, I am fairly sure. When I used alcohol on it , it reacted like schellac.
Tell us about the environmental conditions where you are working on this. Usually the white blush means humidity is being trapped in the shellac, and you would remove it the same way you did the earlier white rings--with denatured alcohol.
Also tell us about the shellac you used. Did you mix from flakes or thin it from canned shellac? How old is it? What variety of denatured alcohol did you use?
Steve, Thanks for your reply. T=65 f., RH=40%. ZIN.3# can shellac cut to 1#. It was inside the exp. date. S-L-X DNA alcohol by Klean Strip from Home Depot. I tried to put on a couple of coats within 10+/- mins. and this maybe the problem??
Also, when I cleaned a spot off the surface with alcohol I came up with a light spot in the finish and now I can not seem to get it dark again. I have tried dark mahogany gel stain , but it does not seem to darken the spot. Should I use a dye? Have some TransTint brown Mahogany. Thanks for your help
I think you should just strip this using denatured alcohol, and have an absolutely beautiful finish. It is an easy strip, and an easy finish, of whatever you want.Gretchen
