I just purchased the Steel City mortiser and want to sharpen the chisels before I start using it. I seacrhed the forums here and saw where the angle of the SC chisels is different than the Delta. I e-mailed Lee Valley and said the sharpening cones they offer come in two different angles. 50-1/2 and 60 degree.
I never found an answer in the forum here as to which cone matches the SC chisels.
Does anyone know for sure which cones I need to get?
Thanks

Put your widest chisel in a vise with cutting end up along with a flat piece of narrow stock about half the width of the chisel and clamp them together. Now slide a very thin piece of stock into the hollow on the chisel and press it flat against the angle. At this point the piece slid inside will cross the flat piece clamped beside the chisel. Draw a line adjacent to how it crosses.
You only need a protractor to find out what the angle of the line you drew at this point.
Good luck...

For preparing your mortising chisels, the most important thing to do is to hone the four outside faces to the same degree of smoothness as you would for your plane irons and bench chisels. This will greatly facilitate the chisel plunging into the wood and coming out cleanly.
Generally, you do not need to sharpen the inside of the chisels for quite a while.
