Hi all. I am having a problem with one of my Swiss made bench chisels. I am getting some surface rust near the tang and about halfway down the top of the chisel. This is a 1″ chisel but I don’t think that matters.
I have the set of 4 chisels and and about 30 of thier gouges, and this is the only chisel I am having problems with.
I have had this set for about 4 years and didn’t notice any problem until a few weeks ago.
I am wondering if my sweaty hands this summer could have caused it. but why wouldn’t it affect my other chisels and gouges which I have been using quite heavily.
More importantly what can I do to stop the rust and prevent it from comming back, and prevent this from happening to my other gouges/chisels.

TT, if the chisel is relatively new, perhaps some of the clear lacquer has been rubbed off. Just buy a sheet of crocus cloth and occasionally polish the tool and it will shine as if it was just bought. Crocus cloth has a coating of jeweler's rouge (fine iron oxide) and is available at machinist's supply.
Steinmetz.
Stein I'd like to find some crocus cloth as well, but out here in the sticks, there are no machinest shops. Any other place that you can think of that would carry the stuff? Is online, McMaster Carr and the like, my only option?

dirtstirrer,
I may have bought some crocus cloth at Autozone, not absolutely sure. The real question I have that maybe Steinmetz or Jackiechan can answer is....would not honing compound (green stick) on some brown paper or leather do the same thing for the chisel?
4 ought steel wool and a dab of CRC will also do the job.

Thanks for the tips I will look for some crocus cloth.
Malcolm what is CRC?

Sorry, probably a local trade name. It's that light oil that you spray out of a can - sometimes used to help start wet motors and loosen rusty nuts!

Rust Buster and Liquid Wrench contains acid (A no no near sharp tool
edges.)
Auto paint and Bondo stores have crocus cloth.
machinists regularly polish their expensive measuring tools with crocus. Steinmetz Good for small scratches on glass too.

leather.. My GrandPop use to make Leather Razor Strops..Sure wish I could remember.. but he always said some type of leather was the best... As I remember he broke the leather in with Oil and powered limestone and a real straight razor! That straigh razor was SO skinny... stropped so much!EDIT;; Sorry just brought back memories...Edited 10/8/2005 1:15 pm ET by WillGeorge EDIT two:: Something I remember from long ago... in our carbon steel knife display: guaranteed to rust....I thing I saw a post that said lacquer on it.. What I would do or wipe it down with oil every other day!

Northern Supply has some stuff called Must for Rust. It kind of smells like Naval Jelly used to. It works good as a remover and a preventative.
