I have a question. If I use a satin varnish is it possible to rub it out and get more gloss? Or is it only possible to have a satin sheen because of the flattening agent?
The product I am using is Old Master’s oil base.
BTW today I was rubbing out a piece of cherry using 0000 steel wool and Murphy’s Oil Soap. This is something an old time finisher shared with me. It was his”secret recipe”!

You can rub out to a higher sheen. Almost all of the satin appearance is caused by surface roughness caused by the flatting agents. Polish them away and you will have a higher sheen. It may not be absolutely as clear and deep gloss as if you started with gloss varnish, but still quite a bit higher.
Remember, with varnish you need to give as long a time as you can before you start rubbing out to give the varnish time to cure and become harder. A month isn't too long with oil based varnish.
