I have owned several different routers over the years but I now need to move up to a more powerful version. I am looking at the Hitachi M-12V, 3 1/4 HP plunge router, 8000-20,000 RPM variable speed and the Makita 3612, 3 1/4 HP plunge router, 9000 to 23,00 RPM variable speed. Both routers are the same price. Any recommendations?

Given my own experience, but mainly from reading all the router comments in these forums, I have come to the conclusion that you can safely select a router based on its features, how it feels to you, etc.
For instance, I personally like the 2 wrench system for collect/bit removal, but others hate it.
I don't ever remember people complaining about the performance of any of the main line brands.
The problem with buying by features is that it is difficult to do so via mail order. You have to get yourself someplace where you can pick each router up and fiddle with it.
Hi Jack I have 3 Makita 3612 routers of varying ages. I have run them hard, both hand held and in table.(My newest one is my favorite under table router) I have no complaints and I can get parts readily at my local hardware. Bob
Not much experience with the M12V but can highly recommend the 3612- I still regret the day I sold it. Don't think you'd go wrong with either one. "Both routers are the same price. " ............... curious about your cost. At Tool Crib/Amazon the M12V is $75.00 less than the 3612C ($175 vrs. $250-US prices), the non variable speed 3612 is $40.00 less.
