I spent most of this weekend flattening a pair of 3′ x 3′ cherry crotch pieces which will become workbench legs. The wood was sawn with an Alaskan mill and chainsaw. While I was flattening the wood, I noticed an interesting pattern. Once most of the high points had been removed, a striped pattern appeared. I quite like the look of it, although this is not the place to use it. I would like to incorporate this look into another project.

You have two of those pieces ? If they were mine I would be looking for another 5'-6' piece and build a George Nakashima style coffee table. You lucky dog.
Or an interesting look would be to butt joint the two smaller ends (book match) with giant hand cut vertical finger joints or dove tails to make the top.

Bruce,
Actually, I have four. The two I am using are the two flattest ones. One of the others is terribly warped. It wants to become a helix, I think.
I don't know what I'd do with a 3' x 6' coffee table, or even where I'd store it.Chris @ http://www.flairwoodwork.spaces.live.com

Okay. But first, send me a cheque for $1500 to cover shipping and handling. I'll give you the wood for $10.Chris @ http://www.flairwoodwork.spaces.live.com

That stock is wonderful!!! One of the WWA guys just finished a threesome set of tables out of curly cherry. Yours could make something more substantial and grander, but just for kicks here's the link:

There's another large round table that's been built over there, but the pictures are missing. It was quite impressive. Will see if they come back.
