I have lots of walnut and birch that has been given me that is now dry and ready to be rough dimensioned (Currently it is all just as it came off the log.) I remember seeing many different sleds and jigs people use for this. I’m curious as to which any of you have built/used and where you found the plans (or dreamed it up).
I have both an 18″ band saw and a cabinet saw – so suggestions for jigs for either are welcome.
Thank you in advance.

I just use a chalk line to snap one, (or both if they are really rough), straight edge to start the dimensioning process at the band saw. From there it is just the jointer, (one flat face), to the planner, (parallel faces), back to jointer, (one true edge), to the table saw, (saw to width). No jigs required
Well, I can't think of a simpler way to do this. Sounds like it would work. I'll try this first as it requires no other jig or sled and see how it goes.Regard it as just as desirable to build a chicken house as to build a cathedral. Frank Lloyd Wright
It works, I have processed more board feet than I can count that way. The bandsaw is the safest way to rip rough lumber if you don't have a straight line ripsaw.
I've built a 8' long by abouth 10" wide sled from 3/4 ply that rides in the right hand side miter slot for my Table saw. I have a 1x2 that is fixed to the leading end of the sled and there are a few screws or nails that protrude back towards the jig. Just push the rough lumber against the spikes and run through to straighten an edge. there are also a few screw protruding back up along the length to help keep the piece secure. It was featured in a past FWW issue. Sorry the description may not be all that clear, but if i think of it i will take a photo or find the old issue #.
Works well and virtually no set up and is quick.

Thanks - sounds like an interesting and effective approach.Regard it as just as desirable to build a chicken house as to build a cathedral. Frank Lloyd Wright
