I hope I spelled ‘marquetry’ right. – lol
My daughter bought this old chair a few months ago and I’ve been ‘requested’ to help her fix it up. Most of the work is really straightforward but I’m not at all familiar with using the inlaid marquetry.
These pics show what it looks like and I need a source for replacement inlay – and any helpful tips on working with it.
Pleading here, folks……….my “Dad The All-Knowing” title is on the line. – lol

It's a little hard to tell from the pics but it looks like just standard inlay strips. Constantine's has a pretty good selection of premade bandings, but I'm not sure they have an exact match for the ones in your chair. If you cant find an exact match, you might have to remove the few that are left and put in all new ones so they match.

If you build it - he will come.
FWW has run at least one article on making inlay strips. It's tedious, but not conceptually difficult. You don't cut thousands of tiny pieces, obviously. :o) Instead you glue up carefully sized and shaped sticks into a log and cut slices off the end.
Here's the FWW magazine index.

Another good resource is Doug Stowe's book on making boxes with inlay. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1558704434/qid=1109549820/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/103-5117880-7624603?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 He goes into depth on how to make them. Upon first reading, it seemed complicated, but then I priced inlay strips at Rockler. If you have just a few and can get the right size, purchased strips would be the way to go, though.
I started this thread in February and got some great responses but the project got delayed for a while. Now, darlin' daughter wants to finish the job but we've hit another snag.
The chair needs both 1/4" and 1/8" inlays and we've found some really neat patterns in one width or the other - but none that come in both widths. Does anyone know of a supplier that sells patterns in different widths?
Other options I'm considering are:
Any comments, ideas, and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Dave,
Rob Millard had an article in FFW not long ago about making that style of Marquety (maybe within the last year). I'm doing an inlay of wenge on chery...kinda gives you a bit of pattern as well as contrasting wood...only a know it all Dad would know about wenge..lol
No daughters, BG?? - lol
When they're growing up, daughters want to think that Dad changes clothes in a phone booth and has a big "S" on his chest. When they're all grown up and gone, you really gotta work to keep the myth alive.
I think we're going to either use two pieces of 1/8" in the 1/4" grooves - or I'll make somethng out of some scrap maple I have - or I'll take her to the local hardwood store and let her pick out one of the exotics they sell.
We also have to completely disassemble the chair and rebuild it since every joint in it has failed. SWMBO has agreed that it might be nice to have one like it for us, so I'll make tracings of the pieces and try my hand at chair building. Maybe then I'll try making my own inlays. - lol
