reepenstien,
Unfortunately there is very little information on making inlays. There is one book I've seen, but I can't remember the title ( I'll check Amazon to see if I can find it). There was an article in FWW by Steve Latta, that shows how to make an oval inlay. There is some so so information in the Taunton book Marquetry and Veneer. There is also a book by Taunton translated from French, this is an excellent book, but the techniques are for the very ornate French furniture, which didn't interest me that much, so I paid little attention to the book. There is even less information on making pattern bandings. The few articles that are available show how to make only the simplest versions. When I decided I wanted to make federal furniture, I had to learn more or less by trial and error. I wrote an article on making a federal card table for the Society of American Federal Period Furniture Makers for their 2003 Journal. The article while dedicated to one specific table, gives an overview of how to make an eagle and urn inlay,( which is adaptable to any pictorial inlay) and a couple of bandings. There is also an article in the same issue on how to make a sand shaded fan, by another author. I think these are for sale, for $15.00 ( I don't profit from the sale, nor did I get paid to write the article) There is one book that I saw but could not find for sale, titled Step by Step Inlay Banding Production by R.F.Loeffler. It was kind of a homemade affair, but it was more detailed than anything I've seen. If you can tell me what kind of banding or inlay you want to make, I might be able to give a more detailed description of how to make it.
