I am looking for any recommendations of products and/or techniques for repairing scratches in wooden table tops. These are in a restaurant and the finsih is a heavy clear-coat. Seems almost plastic like if you dig a nail into it… maybe even a consistency of extremely hard rubber, but clear.
It’s probably a good 1/16 thick, maybe better.
there are a few instance of initials scratched into the finish but not deep enough to scratch the wood…. just marring the fnish enough to be clearly seen.
Is there a product or chemical to rub this out or a filler or any other product or method recommendable?
When you’re this good, EVERYONE wants a crack at you!

If the scratches do not go to the wood beneath, then scrape the finish down and sand with very fine finishing paper. You need to find out what the original finish was, or experiment on one table to see if any finishes you know are compatible. You will not be able to simply make the scratches disappear with simple spot touchups. Good luck, JL
After discussing the matter with my good friend Jeff Buck we've determined that it is likely an epoxy finish typically used for bartops.
I can buy this in a quart-sized kit and perhaps fill the initials and then wetsand and polish... if possible with this type finish.
Or perhaps the epoxy is modifiable with acetone or other chemical to melt initials away?

Test it first. I doubt that you will be able to fill the scratches and make them invisible...I hope for you that I am wrong. Good luck JL
