Hi Peter, I recently finished a project with Homer Formby’s High Gloss Tung oil. However on part of the project I brushed on way to much and would like to remove and start over. I can not sand because the area in question is the wood carving part of the project, so any sanding would alter the carving which I do not want to do. Is there any solvent that would cut the tung oil. I looked at the instructions on the container and there was no information about thinning, cleaning, or removal what would you suggest.
Thanks

jcct,
Solvent won't remove anything. What you have is a varnish finish.
I don't know by your post if you want to remove it all or just on the carving.
The best way to get it off quickly is to use some stripper. If it is only to come off the carved areas, carefully mask off the area to be untouched with some newspaper or rags and then cover it with a stout plastic.
Apply the stripper sparingly, and remove it with something like fine steel wool, a torn piece of scotch pad, a tooth brush and cloth. If you need to do it twice, do so.
By using the stripper sparingly, you don't risk splattering it all over. The stripper will eat through the plastic that's why you have the second layer underneath.
When done with the stripping I would wash the area with denatured alcohol and dry it as you go.
Once dry you can refinish as required.
Good luck.
Peter
