Hi – Generally I love spalted wood and like the character it gives my turnings and small items but in this case I want it gone. I am building an addition and the spalting or mold in the 4 x 6 exposed ceiling beams won’t go away with sanding. Does anyone have a clue how to lose them? I’ve tried H202, (hydrogen peroxide), but that gets it too white and still leaves some of the black streaks. I guess I could learn to love it, but I’m trying for the natural look and these six or seven beams just don’t blend.
Thanks – Mike

Mike, bluestain (that's what you call spalt when you don't want it) is pretty indelible. I think the bleach approach helps and it's probably your only option. The problem is, bleach tends to remove all the color in the wood and the wood's natural pigments usually don't hold up as well as the spalt...so, you'll have to use a strong bleach and take it all the way to white, if you can...and then try to stain it to match the natural color of fir. Wish I could offer an easier way, but I don't think there is one.
too funny. And, a weed is what we call a flower when we don't want it.
Wonder if he could try that new Bleach Pen that Clorox is hyping all over the TV-waves lately. "Apply the bleach where you want it." Could get expensive I s'pose.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
