I had three pine patio doors installed and the installers left numerous dirt, scuff and fingerprint smudges on the raw wood. How do I remove/clean before applying dark mahogony stain? The stain took unevenly in another situation where I lightly sanded smudges off.
NoTalent, but trying to save a buck and doing it myself.

Since you mention fingerprint smudges, I assume there's some oil component to the crap they left on there. I'd use Naptha and alot of ventilation. Mineral spirits work for general cleaning, but I suspect the Naptha would be more effective and efficient on oily places. By scuffs, what do you mean? They didn't stand on them did they?? Oh dear.

oh dear! pretty much sums it up. I'll get the naptha. The scuffs are shoe sole partial prints/smears where they "adjusted" the bottom jambs in. I was GC on my own extensive remodel but was gone the day they threw the patio doors in. My error.
Thanks again
Rick
Here's a crazy idea for the shoe scuffs. Don't ask me why, but I'm wanting to try a giant eraser on them! Clean them first with mineral spirits, let it dry and then try a block eraser on them. Sometimes I get these crazy ideas.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
have you tried mr.clean magic eraiser?
"have you tried mr.clean magic eraiser?" No, but I have a little eraser "bag" that I used to use on lamp shades back in my furniture-selling days. Amazing little thing. Small, tightly woven bag with eraser stuff inside (I guess).forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Forestgirl,
Jeez that brings back memories. We used to use those eraser bags (or whatever they are really called) back in drafting class (must be about two millenia ago now <G>). Things do work well though. Can you still get them?

You might try this link http://www.draftingdeals.com/draftingdeals/catalog.cfm?dest=itempg&itemid=6911&secid=70&linkon=subsection&linkid=165 seems that some things are still available for us non-cad users
Pat
Thanks for the info. I guess some old things are still usefull!
Bob
Oh, c'mon now Bob, it couldn't have been more than one millenium! <g>
I didn't know they originated in the drafting world. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
ForestGirl,
I'm not sure they originated in the drafting world, but I do remember using them in drafting class in high school. (Do they even have drafting classes in high school anymore? Probably with cad software now)
Bob
Bob,
They still use those bags in the cad drafting classes here in_____ (insert your favorite state to pick on) , they are useful in removing whiteout from computer screens.
Ray
Cute.
