Thanks a lot, Didn't think about Penn State.

I've had good luck with this one.------------------------------------

Thanks, I ordered one today. More expensive is not always better. Thanks
It's a good one. I've had it for a year or so now with no problems. I bought a second remote so I always have one nearby (also clips to belt of course).
No more "oh I'll just do this one quick cut without the DC".
I don't recommend the cheaper copies.
Brian
I've had mine 5 years now, no problems. It comes with 2 remotes. My dad has had his 4 years, no problems. Mine starts a 3 hp cyclone multiple times a day 5 days a week.------------------------------------

So I guess you would recommend it. I can't.
Did you have one of that brand that you had a problem with?------------------------------------

No, never owned one so, as I said, I can't recommend it. I am a believer in, that on average, you get what you pay for. If you are having good luck with it then God bless, but I wouldn't take the chance. I would rather deal with someone like Penn State and heed the recommendations of friends from knots who recommended the Long Ranger III over any other cheap imitation. Glad I did.
Good Woodworking-
Brian
Brian,
I have the Long Ranger as well and I will agree that it does it's job very well. However, I would not discount the cheaper priced items because I have come to realize that - You don't always get what you pay for. I think I understand where Don is coming from in that you can't make a recommendation against something just because it's cheaper.
In the case of Penn State Industries, you certainly do not get what I would call customer service, much less good customer service. I bought a dust collector from them which was damaged in shipping (hidden damage). Many headaches and 2-3 weeks worth of waiting for parts and not even so much as an apology. If that were Lee Valley, the part I needed would have been overnighted and received the next day. Moral of the story? When it's time to upgrade to a 3hp or 5hp cyclone, Oneida will get my cash.
Cheers,
Lee
Hi Lee,
Not to be argumentative , but I certainly can recommend against something just because it's cheaper. That's my opinion. Nobody has to blindly go by anyone' recommendations though, that's just common sense. We were all asked for our opinions and I gave mine. Take it or leave it. I have a feeling Don didn't take mine to heart. Cool living in America huh?
Brian
Hey Brian,
No worries on being argumentative. Just a difference of opinion.
Cheers,
Lee
That' the way I see it too. Thanks Lee.

Ahhhh, the ol' "You get what you pay for" theme. "Chevy vs. Ford" generates almost as much heat. More than once, I've asked Don's advice when it comes to various tools because of his experience. To highlight: "...when I was in the business I probably sold a couple of hundred [fill in the blank] units and never had a problem or a return." Having someone here at Knots who has that kind of experience is very helpful, especially when they are also a professional woodworker.
I can always ask the salesman behind whatever counter I'm standing at "do you get many complaints about these?" but what are the chances I'll get a completely honest answer?

Everyone has an opinion. I think we've beaten this one completely to death though.

AGREED!

I generally have the same philosophy, however when I was in the business I probably sold a couple of hundred of the Shop Fox units and never had a problem or a return.
I don't know how the range compares to the more expensive units, my shop is 60x20 with the dust collector somewhat shy of midway. Works every time in that distance.------------------------------------
