My lovely wife has suggested that I make her a television unit for Christmas, that in itself is not a problem. However, she requires solid doors in front of all the DVD players etc. Is there a system that would allow me to have the doors closed and still use the remote controls, some sort of relay system with a transceiver on the top of the unit?

co,
You may find what's called a remote or satellite eye , try radio shack or the likes for info on specific brand .
Maybe in front of the dvd you could use a panel made of cane or glass or ?
good luck dusty
good sugestion however, she who must be obeyed wants solid doors!
Have you addressed cooling with the solid doors?Cheers,Peter
Better life through Zoodles and poutine...
Yes the back panel will be open and a slot in the floor at the front to allow air flow I hope that will be enough
You could make the door panels out of cloth that would allow the radio waves of the remote control to pass through. I've seen it done with some sort of burlap that looks good.
Check out Rockler. They have several such systems. By the way, many, probably most remotes use IR light, not radio so it would have to be visual.
Thanks I'll check the website
First off I am not selling or recommending anything. Attached is just the first link I looked at.
I did a Google search: remote for cabinet enclosed electronics
http://www.homecontrols.com/cgi-bin/main/co_disp/displ/prrfnbr/1195/sesent/00/Hot-Link-PRO-IR-Remote-Extender
I found many others.
My nextdoor neighbor has MONEY and then some. Their system uses fiber optics that run to each floor of the house to each entertainment center. Somehow the remotes are coded by floor. I assume.
As a side note on your encloseur. WATCH THE HEAT! As in ventelation required. A killer for expensive electronics. AND surge protection!
in the area of the slot below, place a dental mirror aimed at the little target lens that recieves the signal It may take two of you to find the best location I know a mirror can do this if positioned in the line of sightof the receiver. Steinmetz
Anotherway may require fiber optic cable or, a proctoscope? :)

thanks one and all,
The info received is excellent I have now found a supplier and more important know what I need. I will also keep an eye on the heat and if necessary put a small fan in the unit.
These folks sell all forms of IR receivers: https://www.tselectronic.com/vend_prod_list/xantech.html?tse_Session=cea8483db788a9bf9e567482304a8203
Each eye is connected to a receiver block which is in turn connect to an aux. input on whatever devise you wish to control As another poster mentioned, you need to provide sufficient venting due to heat buildup and this can be accomplished by installing fans similar to those used in PCs. Of course the other option is provide breather holes/slots in the rear of the cabinet.

They have infrared receiver-repeaters that are small and can be made unobtrusive.
Yes,you can buy these through Rockler but the price points compared to tselectronic.com, for example, are significant: a 4-receiver kit at Rockler is $74.95 vs. $55.95 and the 10-receiver kit at Rockler is $149.99 compared to the same kit at $111.55. I am comparing the exact model numbers so we talking apples to apples. Doug
