I Have a 3′ x 5′ parsons table…that is glued 1 x 1’s of solid maple…I want to strip it and refinish it. Current surface is probably old tung oil..( table is 40 yrs.old ).
Do I just use a sanding block with a variety of sandpaper?

I'd start with hot soapy water and a stiff scrub brush - a thorough, hard scrub - dry it off and evaluate what is left - - careful with the sandpaper or you'll get streaks and blotches -
what's wrong with the original finish?

Thank you for your comments...The service has yellowed...I want to bring back that clean Maple surface...

Why not just use a stripper. You will remove any patina if you sand. SANDING is NOT a good method of paint/varnish/finsh removal.

Gretchen...
Do you have a brand of "stripper " in mind...?
Thanks for your comments..jf
You probably don't need a real heavy duty stripper since it isn't paint and is a clear finish. Just Strip-eze or Bix or some such. I usually do some heavy duty stripping so always get the heaviest can on the shelf--the one with the most methylene chloride.Gretchen
