I am looking for a recipe for Japanese-style red lacquer, similar to the lacquer used on violins.
Thanks

One part Urushi (Rhus vernicifera), sap from a sumac (binder).
One part Dragon's Blood (Daemonorops spp.), resin from a palm (binder and coloring agent).
One to two parts alcohol (vehicle).
If you have a problem locating urushi you can substitute gum Copal and a little gum Sandarac.

Thank you.
Two last questions. Can you recommend a supplier for the urushi and the dragon's blood? And, is ethanol an appropriate alcohol vehicle?
Thanks,
Naguro
